Full Description
Hoxne Priory (site of).
A small religious house dedicated to St Ethelbert, King and Martyr (executed 794) is said to have existed here in pre-Norman times (S1). Theodred Bishop of London & E Anglia in will, c.951-5, left land at Horham `into Hoxne into sce. Aethelbrichtes kirke ther godes hewen', i.e. `to God's community at St Ethelbert's Church in Hoxne'. Bishop Aelfric of Elmham also made a bequest in 1035 & 1038, `to the priests at Hoxne' (S2). The `hewen' or community of priests is perhaps more likely to have been serving the main Hoxne church (see HXN 018).
2017: Ground penetrating radar geophysical survey was successful in recording anomalies of a structure which may be indicative of walls and rubble spreads, likely to relate to the medieval priory and the post-medieval farmhouse (S3).
2019: see Med for GPR survey results
See Med for later priory on this site.
A ground penetrating radar survey was undertaken within the curtilage of the Benedictine Hoxne Priory, a Scheduled Monument and a standing 19th century farmhouse. This followed earth resistance meter and ground penetrating radar surveys conducted in 2017, which recorded structural anomalies indicative of walls and rubble spreads. The current phase further prospected anomalies indicative of walls and rubble spreads potentially associated with the Priory, along with outlying ditches and discrete anomalies (S6).
