Full Description

1991: Scatter of pottery & metalwork found in an area circa 130 by 200 metres around an extraction (?sand) pit. A couple of dark soil areas noted to E of main concentration. The pottery, all grey wares, ranges from C1-C4 with several wasters in a distinctive sandy fabric and further examples of this fabric all C3/C4 forms - suggests possible production site. Coins (117) range from Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-180) to Constantius (353-354). Brooches include a fly-type trumpet brooch, a fan-tail Colchester derivative and a lion bow (related to thistle) type. Also a leg from a figurine (human) with iron attachment, two facetted pin heads, a finger ring fragment, a stud with millefiori enamelling and a lava quern lower stone fragment and a possible miniature terret ring fragment. There was no noticeable tile in the area (S1). Also enamelled disc brooch and ?bow brooch fragment (SSA002/ 10)(SSA002/3)(S2). Further Colchester derivative brooch fragments (S3).
