Full Description
Route of Roman road between Ilketshall St John and Spexhall. Named Stone Street. Part of Margary's road 36 (S1). Halesworth to ?Caister via Bungay. This section follows line of modern A144.
Stone Street (Medieval name). Margary notes that some surviving lengths of this road seem to be of fairly substantial construction but the line disappears in Norfolk, south of Caister. The line could be projected south to either Wenhaston or Knodishall (S2).
From NRHE Record:
This road, with its non-Roman terminii, is only the recognisable central portion, mostly Stone Street, of a route between Venta [Caistor] and the Sitomagus of the Antonine Itinerary Iter IX (not yet located, but generally thought to be in the Dunwich/Yoxford area). [See OS Linear Archive for bibliography to 1973, and OS field investigation of the route 1977 and 1979].
