Full Description
St Peter's & St Paul's church, Alpheton. There is not a church recorded here in the Domesday book but it is thought to be one of the two churches documented for the parish of Shrimpling (S3). It is W of the parish in the grounds of the Hall. The C15 S porch is of wood, but considerably disguised by successive restorations. The nave and chancel and quite a substantial W tower are Perpendicular. The chancel arch is flanked by two canopied niches, that on the N having been re-fixed higher up in the C19 to accommodate an absurd opening, which has very obviously weakened the chancel arch abutment. The S niche shows colour traces. The C14 sedilia and piscina must have been fine when complete. A lot of C15 glass canopy work is now incorporated in the glazed tower screen. It has poor box pews with only a few poppy-heads in the nave. The pulpit is Jacobean and the font has an old C13 base. On the N wall is a dim painting of St Christopher which is late C14 (S1)(S2).
