Full Description
Rectangular moat shown on 1839 Tithe Map of Brantham. Adjoined the S side of the existing Hall and measured approximately 60m N-S by 65m E-W, near the house, tapering to 55m at the S end (S1).
The moat now appears to have been filled in, though the southern arm still shows as a cropmark (S2). See below.
Hall belonged to the Wingfield family in the C16 & C17.
May 2009: site visit by Edward Martin observed brick foundations visible in sides of open cable trench cut at right angles to front of house from the NE corner - at 8.87m northwards (from house corner) trench cut through a mortared brick foundation about 60cm wide. 3.55m N of this the trench cut through another brick foundation about 37cm wide. Both sets of foundations survived to a height of 30cm from the base of the 66cm deep trench and used unfrogged red bricks about an inch and a quarter thick. These foundation probably relate to a long thin building shown in this general position on the tithe map of 1839, but had disappeared by the 1850s. The foundations suggest a building with an internal width of about 11ft 7in - too narrow to be a barn, but could possibly have been a stable.
The moat to the rear of the house was re-excavated in the 1990s on approximately the lines of the moat shown on the tithe map and indicated by depressions (S3).
