Full Description
Old Brook Hall. Tudor brick manor house built(?) in C16. Said to be 1 mile S of present Brook Hall (S1). Described by Suckling (R1) as having two gables, projecting from the extreme angles of the front, and flanking a central porch which gave access to the great hall, forty feet by thirty-two feet. This rose to the full height of the mansion. 'No trace remains of old Brook Hall, and one can only guess at its possible site' (S1). Demolished in 1805. Inventory of 1629 lists 24 rooms, including pantries, butteries, galleries and garrets plus outbuildings & yards. Residence of Arthur Coke, third son of Sir Edward Coke, Lord Chief Justice of England in reign of James I. Details in (S5).
Claimed to have been 'situated near King Stall Wood' (S1) but no major properties mapped there on 1753 or 1783 maps (S2)(S3). Possibly originally located close to the present Brook Hall or at Broad Oak Farm (TM 386 742) which was named as Bramfield Old Hall by Hodskinson (S3) in the ownership of 'Ward Esq' in 1753 (S2). Broad Oak Farm is listed as having remains of high quality timber work and a gallery of C16 date, and as being cased in red brick, with a C18 facade (S4).
