Full Description

Excavation by engineers to establish load bearing capacity of soil within `1A The Courtyard' before restoration. Cleaned and recorded by SAU. Established that the interior of the West Front has more than 2.8m of PMed deposit (soil and flint rubble bands). The base of the test pit (at 35.54 OD) reached a rough cobble surface, this could not be penetrated because of the constricted size of the shaft, but appeared to be a structural feature, probably an Abbey floor (S1, S2).
