Full Description
Two oval racecourses marked and named as `The Courses' on Bowen's 1755 map (S1). The smaller course, to the North West, is probably that which survived as the `Race Ground' shown on Hodskinson's 1783 map (S2) and the OS 1st ed map of 1838 (S3). Still marked on 1880s OS map with 'Grand Stand' at TM 1844 4297. W half and grand stand gone by 1900s.
Racecourse illustrated on St Clements Tithe Map 1844, Tithe apportionment states: Owner: Cristie John Esq Trustees of, Occupier: Cobbold John Esq, Description: The Race Course. Buildings illustrated on the map, could be possible grandstand - see record IPS 1828 for location (S5).
Area still named `Racecourse' and despite being covered with 20th Century housing the property boundaries preserve the racecourse over much of its length - see (S4).
For similar racecourse see Snape Misc.
