Full Description
Cropmark of small rectilinear enclosure, circa 35m wide by 35m long (not square, one end?at an angle), N of Round Wood (S1).
Boundaries align with existing wood and field boundaries.
Field boundaries or possibly drains of probable medieval or post-medieval date are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs, to the north of Round Wood, Mettingham parish, centred on circa TM361885. The cropmarks have been interpreted as forming over ditches which form a series of narrow rectangular enclosures which are aligned with the boundary of Round Wood and the surrounding field boundaries. However the absence of visible southern sides does not support a function as enclosures and they may simply be the remains of drains feeding into the water management system surrounding the wood.
