Full Description
Watermill beside Ford Bridge, Combs Ford on Rattlesden River. Shown on Bowen's map of 1755 (S1) and on Kirby's map of 1736 (S5). On Hodskinson's map of 1783 a wheel is shown without paddles (S2), possibly indicating out of use by that date. Listed by Wailes as Combs Mill having 3 pairs of stones and a wheel and dated to circa 1540. Gutted in 1960 (S3).
Stowmarket Mill: This timber built and tiled mill was in the process of demolition this year (1960). All the machinery had been scrapped (S4).
Ogilby's map, 1675, does not show watermill at this point but two windmills (see SKT Misc)(S6).
