Square moat clearly shown on Assington tithe map of 1837, named `The Island' in apportionment, plot 56 (S1).
Also shown on 1st ed 1 inch map (S2).
For possible early references to site - see Assington Hall, ASN 001. Field to N named `Stew/Hew banks' (S1).
Shown as roughly circular, tree-covered and with an access bridge on the east side on a map of 1817 (S3). Eastern half of circuit still shown on modern maps. Could be an ornamental garden feature
