Full Description

1996: Linear bank running for approx 290m through coniferous plantation. Starts at TL 8259 8693 and continues westwards. At the end of the compartment it turns a right angle and continues south for approx 30m. See parish file for full description (under STN 044). Curious `lug' on northern side of bank where bank froms a protusion with small entrance on northern edge which leads to a shallow scooped hollow in front. A deep ?marl pit is located approx 5m to the south of this feature. Second edition OS map shows it to be part of large enclosure, of which the other three sides presumably do not exist (as earthworks). However, the 2nd edition OS map shows there to be a large pit occupying all of this area. Is OS map incorrect or has there been some change since this date? Is this an arable enclosure with marl pit or a large sheep enclosure with possible sheep dip? Note the presence of similar enclosure with same kind of `lug and pit' arrangement to the west on the same map (S1).

July 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The post medieval boundary bank described above is visible as an earthwork on imagery from a recent lidar survey (S2). It is depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S3), and has therefore not been mapped by the project. The polygon defining the site has been amended to accord with the location of the feature on the lidar imagery.
