Full Description

Site of Great Glemham Hall. A manor of `Great Glemham or Lowdham Hall' belonged to Butley Priory and after the Dissolution was granted to Anne of Cleves by Henry VIII. In 1545 the reversion of the manor, after Anne's death, was granted to William Edgar (S1). Edgar family continued to live at the Hall until the C18. An illustration on a pedigree of the Edgars, c.1733, shows an E-shaped house with a central two-storey porch and a geometric garden in front of it (S2). By 1764 the estate had been acquired by the Hon Nicholas Herbert of Little Glemham Hall (S3). Hall apparently occupied by Daniel Waythe Esq in 1783 (S4). Occupied by the poet George Crabbe 1796- 1801, as tenant of the Norths of Little Glemham Hall (S5).
House probably demolished c.1814 when present Glemham House built by Samuel Kilderbee. Estate worker's house near the site - mentioned as `Bailiffs Farm House' in 1829 and as `Pheasantry and Game Keepers House' in 1839 (S1) - said to be converted stables of the Hall (S6). In 1949 this was three cottages `with an obviously 18th century elevation' (S5).
