Full Description

St Edmundsbury and Ipswich diocese, Suffolk archdeaconry, Hoxne deanery. Status : vicarage. The church lies in the NW of the parish in the village (S5).
Erected C13. Structure : chancel, nave, N and S aisle, a chapel on the N side, two porches, tower at W end. Decorated and Perpendicular architecture (S1).
"The W tower is Decorated as is the structure of the chancel, and apparently the N chapel". "The rest is Perpendicular. Both aisles are Perpendicular. So is the clerestory, and so are both porches". "Hammerbeam roof" (precis) (S2) "Externally, at the apex of the gable E of the nave, is the best example of a stone sanctus bell turret in the county". "Outside the S wall of the church is the tomb of William Sancroft, Archbishop of Canterbury, who finished his days here, 1693, after his deprivation for not taking the oaths to William and Mary". "The chief glory of this church is the magnificent set of nave benches. The richly traceried bench ends, with buttressed arm rests and poppy-heads, are very varied in design and have symbols, heraldry and figures" (precis) (S3).
