Full Description

Series of Un field boundaries on AP plus two wide parallel lines at E end of Martlesham Heath airfield (military?)(S1).
Undated field boundaries and footpaths across the eastern edge of Martlesham Heath are visible on aerial photographs as cropmarks centred approximately on TM258452, adjacent to features associated with more recent military activity. Curvilinear cropmarks to the immediate east of Spratt's Plantation, at circa TM257453, are probably the remains of grubbed up or ditched medieval or post-medieval field boundaries. Numerous less substantial, and not transcribed cropmarks to the south of this point are the tracks of paths across the Heath, some of which are marked on the First and Second Edition Ordnance Survey maps (S2, S3). The wide parallel lines described above are probably military in origin, as they can be seen in association with other military features on aerial photographs of 1944 (S4). The very regular linear features centred on circa TM260449, and aligned on a north-west to south-east axis, are probably footpaths of post-medieval date, the cropmarks forming over either banks or earth compressed by the passing of feet. Although not marked on the historical maps available to the survey, they appear to meet, and fit into the pattern of, the more regular paths that are transcribed on S2 and S3 (S5-S9).
Includes Scheduled Monuments 21268 (see MRM 011-013).
