Summary

Several undated linear ditch features are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs on land to the east of Hinton Lodge, Blythburgh. They appear to represent a rectilinear field system or enclosures, or possible common-edge settlement of medieval to post medieval date, and at least one possible trackway. Geological features were also showing as cropmarks in this area, and it proved difficult in places to differentiate archaeological features from geological marks.

Full Description

Linear cropmarks - ? track, rectilinear field system noted on SAU AP 1977 (S1).

January 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
Several undated linear ditch features are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs(S2-S8) on land to the east of Hinton Lodge, Blythburgh. They appear to represent a rectilinear field system or possible common-edge settlement of medieval to post medieval date, although the area is not marked as a common on Hodskinson’s Map of Suffolk (S9) and at least one possible trackway. Geological features were also showing as cropmarks in this area, and it proved difficult in places to differentiate archaeological features from geological marks. The monument polygon has been extended to the west, as further field boundary cropmarks are visible on an oblique photograph (S10), which has not been rectified as it had few or no control points and was situated outside the current project area.
E. Ford (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 14th January 2015.

2024: Geophysical survey identified anomalies of probable linear ditch features on land to the east of Hinton Lodge. Report and futher details to follow (S11).
