Full Description
Site of St Peter's Chapel (circa 12th century), near Old Market Place used by fishing community. Declined as River Waveney receded and fishing industry declined. Still in use for divine service in 1470. Demolition date unknown (S1). Location after (S2).
According to the official guide to the market town of Beccles the chapel was for the convenience of those buying and selling herring in the adjoining market and was dedicated to St Peter, the patron saint of fishing. Chapel was seized during 'the dissolution of the Monasteries and granted, with other properties in Beccles, to William Rede in 1536, who used it as a dwelling house…' (unsubstantiated - see Listed Building details of present St Peters House [of 18th century date] which state that chapel was demolished in mid 16th century).
