Full Description
'Roman lead coffin and soldier' said (by former unnamed construction worker) to have been sliced through by (JCB?) digger when building service road behind Bures Road in 1960s/early 70s. Cited NGR approximation only. Apparently reported in East Anglian Daily Times and taken to Colchester Museum (S1)(R1), however, not recorded by Colchester Museum (S2).
Reported in Suffolk Free Press (circa 1970). Lead coffin with inhumation in side of soakaway dug between Stanard Way and Bures Road. Also complete pottery vessels and cremated bone discovered in subsequent excavation suggesting part of larger mixed site cemetery. Details in (S3). Formerly recorded as COG Misc.
