Full Description

Evaluation by desk-base assessment (Posford Duvivier, including historical research by A. Breen, not seen) and trenching (SAU) located number of prehistoric pits and undated ditches (S1). Later monitoring located pit and ditches. Assemblage from one pit and unstratified, probably IA. Also Med and PMed presence though standard of archaeology very low (S2) (S3 (S4).
Partially overlaps site COR 009 (multiperiod scatter).
Also a few Med and Pmed finds/features.
Also Sax record.

Archaeological evaluation of part of a proposed development area was undertaken in order to sample and record any surviving archaeological deposits. This consisted of a series of sixteen linear trenches, machine-excavated to the depth of the natural sub-soil. The trench surfaces and excavated topsoil were subjected to a metal detector survey.
A number of features were exposed and investigated, dated as prehistoric through to post-medieval. These features were quite widely spread over the 13 hectare site but include two slight concentrations of activity, one of which may represent part of a prehistoric field system. The finds from the various features suggest that the main period of activity occurred during the Bronze or Iron Age, but some of the artefacts may be Neolithic. In addition, a fragment of an early Anglo-Saxon brooch was recovered as a stray find. Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 1999 (S4).
