Full Description

Medieval (including Saxon) town, defined as Area of Archaeological Importance in Local Plan (S1). For Medieval town ditch excavations see IPS 053, 168, 173 & 178.

2005:Desk Based assessment was undertaken into the archaeological potential of two areas of Ipswich known as the Tower Ramparts and Old Cattle Market Areas. The assessment identified the archaeological evidence suggests that both sites have a high potential for deposits relating to the Saxon and medieval history of the town. It is likely that such deposits are likely to be relatively deeply buried under a post-medieval build up of material at least 1m deep (S3).
