Full Description

Rectangular inhabited moat at the edge of the parish (S1). Sherds of C16 pottery have been found here (S2).
Basil Brown visited Chediston Grange in May 1961, when he and Gilbert Burroughes measured the moat, circa 186 feet x 218-226 feet, sketch in archive. He states that the moated site was originally the manor house site of the Hovells (S3).
1994 Scheduling information: The monument includes a moated site 900m SW of Chediston village and 100m from the S boundary of the parish. The moat which is water-filled and spring-fed encloses a rectangular island 50m N-S by 38m E-W (internal diameter) with opposed causeways across N and S arms. Moat ditches are up to 2m deep, and range in width from 8m on the W to 14m on the E, with overall maximum diameter 75m N-S by 58m E-W.
Timber piles from a footbridge preserved below water level on W arm, also listed. Dwelling house is part C17 and Listed Grade II, occupies centre of island. Moated site at Chediston Grange survives well and will retain valuable archaeological information concerning the construction, occupation and use of the site (S4).
