Monument record LKH 020 - Roman Field

Coin hoard in butt beaker brought to surface by deep ploughing by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) on 23 November 1959. From small hole in natural chalk. Coins consisted:- 67 (Republican and Imperial) silver denarii and 415 native coins (2 gold staters of Cunobelinus and 1 of Antedios, remainder Iceni silver)(S1)(R1). 65 Republican and early Imperial, 402 silver Iceni, 3 gold (S2)(R2)(S3)(S6). Denarii date up to AD 34. Details of discovery and following activities and excavation see Grace Briscoe archive (S4). Further gold Iceni stater reported 1976 (stolen site file). September 1988: (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) reports further gold (Iceni?) coin, reported to him by finder in September 1988, who described it as horse obverse, plain reverse and clean, completely unpatinated (probably gold). Found 1987/1988, given to land owner (Mrs ?) by finder (S5).
