Monument record DNT 012 - Earthworks of probable medieval moat at Goymor’s Farm

Please read our .

Summary

A substantial L-shaped earthwork ditch, possibly part of a medieval moat, is depicted on historical and modern maps, and is visible on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data. It partially surrounded the former farmstead of Goymor’s Farm (SHER DNT 025). Visualisations of data from the most recent consulted lidar survey, flown in 2023, show that the earthworks still survived at that date.

Full Description

Two, L shaped, wide, water-filled arms (S & E) of probable moat. Much recently disturbed building debris spread on interior surface, mostly PMed but including largish fragment of worked limestone (left in situ). Presumably remains of extensive range of buildings shown on 1880s OS map when named Gormor's Farm. Named as Gymers on OS 1836 map.
Also large (eratic?) stone on exterior of moat on approx boundary line of Easty Park (see HUD 015) - possible boundary marker? (S1).
Further research needed.

June 2026. South-West Suffolk Claylands Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
The remains of the possible medieval moat described above are visible as a substantial earthwork on aerial photographs (such as S2) and visualised lidar data from surveys flown in 2018 (S3) and 2023 (S4). A possible additional element of the moat is visible on the lidar visualisations approximately 25m to the west of the previously recorded arm (at approximately TL 7554 5131), but this could be a more recent drain or boundary ditch. Given the relatively recent date of the lidar surveys, it is likely that the earthworks still survive.
