Full Description
Medieval town of Orford. By 1154 the market was already in existence. By 1165 it comprised a grid of streets to E of adjoining castle (ORF 001). It had a borough charter and grant of a market in 1256. The town included a market place, church (ORF 003), the Priory (ORF 002 and 033 & 035), quay (ORF 034), finds scatters see (ORF 001) - bronze spear head and iron javelin heads from the castle. See ORF 011 for the castle house, grounds, Mundays House and pits ,floors and pottery. See also ORF005, ORF 006 for pottery and ORF 032 for extensive Med deposits revealed by evaluation and excavation.
HBSMR mapping mainly after Hodskinson's and early OS maps and Listed Building distribution but also see Appleton map of 1588 of Aldeburgh, Orford, the Ness, Alde and Ore (Ipswich Record Office, P447/5). A large dock/quay/harbour with adjoining buildings on west (east side of Quay Street) and east sides are shown on Appleton's and earlier Anon map of circa 1570-80 (where it is shown holding vessels) but Norden's map of circa 1600 shows this as a ditch just to E of Quay Street, though area to east could have been a dock (as shown by Appleton) that had gone out of use by this date?.
