Full Description
2008: Monitoring for the replacement of the existing storm drains revealed the remains of part of the original flint-built west wall of the Guildhall and an early brick-built repair contemporary with the addition of the porch in the 15th century. Early iron down-pipes, probably part of an early post-medieval drainage system were sealed behind the existing façade which was added during the late 18th century. Evidence of the precinct wall was seen in cross-section as a stub behind the later façade. The stub is the remains of a high precinct wall that enclosed the building and separated it from the street as shown still in existence on the late 18th century engraving. Further evidence of the wall can be seen as a scar on either side of the porch and also at the rear of the building. Evidence of the former hall keeper's dwelling was also seen south of the porch, as shown on Warrens' 1742 plan. A medieval ground surface and well preserved archaeological levels were identified at c.0.3m below existing pavement level from which late medieval pottery was recovered (S1).
