Farmstead record SAS 021 - Farmstead: Westwick Farm

The redundant farm buildings lie to the N of the farmhouse, an unlisted 17th C building. They represent the fragmented western range of a much larger complex, which has been demolished.

Brick Granary and Open-sided Shelter: Found in the N-W corner of the complex. Made of red brick and extends 13m in length and spans 10.5m. Pan-tiled, shallow pitched pentice roofs, sealed by lath-and-plaster - a relatively expensive method. Original shuttered windows and a pair of opposing doors. The door to the S gable of the shelter gives access to the 17th C shed. A rare purpose built store with raised floors and doors. C. 1860.

17th C enclosed shed: weather boarded shed with a corrugated iron roof. Rare 17th C timber framed structure. Important as shows the nature of early animal housing. Roof rebuilt in the 19th C. N end truncated by the granary. Probably a cow shed as original ceiling (usually evident on 17th C stables) is missing. 19 ft by 14ft. Oak frame fully tenoned and pegged in the Medieval tradition. C. 1640, but possibly older. Possible wattle and daub.

Brick sheds: apparently contemporary with the granary (S1).

Westwick Farm, Stoke Ash. 17th century farmstead and 19th century farmhouse with converted buildings. Regular courtyard multi-yard plan formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. Significant loss (over 50%) of the traditional farm buildings. Located within an isolated position (S2-7).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
