Full Description

15th/16th C farmhouse with a complex of 20th C buildings attached to an early 19th C timber-framed barn. The barn has 3 bays, with a central entrance in the west elevation. It also retains an original 19th C porch, though the current entrance is a late 19th/early 20th C alteration. The roof structure is a replacement of the same period. The original framing is largely in-tact. The 20th C additions include cattle enclosures and loose boxes.

The porch is an unusual structure, however the barn is too late in date for listing.

At the time of inspection the barn contained a rare 19th C feed mill with painted wooden sides, bearing the name N Warren, Agent, Elmswell. Nathen Warren was listed in the 1881 census as a wheelwright and blacksmith (S1).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
