Full Description

White House Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is regular F plan with the farmhouse detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a private track in an isolated location. There has been a partial loss of working buildings with modern sheds to the side (S2, S3,S4).

Two storey barn constructed in the late 16th C- early 17th C with oak framed walls. This structure was possibly originally a dwelling although parts were rebuilt in the 19th C, including the roof, when it was used as an agricultural building; many original materials were re-used during these modifications and a single storey extension was also added at this time. The barn is 13.5X6.3m and is divided into four bays. It once had a number of diamond mullioned windows, however these have been removed, although in some places the original studwork still survives (S1).

The barn is the major surviving building of a group of traditional buildings serving White House Farm, which is itself a Grade 2 listed building dating to c.1600. However the remains of a moat to the south of the barn suggest that this site was occupied even earlier. (S1)

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data (S5).
