Full Description

Cookley Green Farm is a farmstead visble on the 1st Ed OS map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular E-plan with farmstead detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a public road in an isolated position. This farmstead survives intact with modern working buildings added to the side.

17th C farm buildings including a timber-framed and part-plastered part-rendered farmhouse with a tiled roof. This house is formed of a 3 cell range and a cross wing, which are likely to have once been two detached ranges. The house also contains a number of ovolo-mullioned windows.

In addition there is a timber-framed and weatherboarded 4 bay barn with a purlin roof at this site, which appears to have been used to house cattle. It contains a lofted area covering two bays and also included a number of ovolo-mullioned windows which suggests that this area of the barn may have been used for seasonal accommodation (S1).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
