Full Description
Twenty-one 40m x 1.8m trenches were excavated to evaluate a 5% sample of the development area. Medieval clay pits dated to the later 13th-14th century were recorded in the north-west of the site, with residual pottery suggesting earlier activity dating from the 12th century. Two groups of drainage gullies were recorded at the northern and southern ends of the site, divided by a stream valley. These are tentatively dated to the medieval period and are interpreted as land drains dug to improve the heavy clay soil for agriculture. The medieval clay quarrying and agriculture is related to similar activity recorded in Cedars Park phase 4b immediately to the north-west, and to a medieval farmstead dated to the 12th-14th centuries, excavated in Cedars Park phase 4a 500m to the north-west of the site (S1).
