Full Description

Timber-framed and plastered farmhouse, built in 4 phases from mid C15 to mid C16. The earliest part of the house is a 15th C open hall, with a heavily smoke-blackened crown-post roof. It originally had a further cell at the rear; the hall may have been kept on as a kitchen or bakehouse for the house built in C16. A 4 bay service range was attached to the hall c.1500 with a crownpost roof and diamond-mullioned windows. A cross-wing was then constructed on the other side of the open hall, again with a crownpost roof and mullioned windows; this contained a hall and a solar. The hall was re-built c.1550-1570 and a high quality parlour was added; this had a clasped-purlin roof and mullioned windows (S1).

Walnut Tree Farm, Henley. 19th century farmstead and 16th century farmhouse. Dispersed multi-yard plan formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. Partial loss (less than 50%) of the traditional farm buildings. Located within an isolated position (S2-7).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
