Full Description
Former parish church of St Dennis, built by Abbot Baldwin (1065-1097) and demolished by Abbot Anselm (1121-1148) for construction of N tower of West Front of Abbey church. Replaced with church of St James by Anselm.
1958: said to have been partly identified by Ralegh Radford during excavations when work began on the new Cathedral Quire/chancel (S1)(also see BSE 118 for Radford's excavations) - details not checked.
Plotted in area of N tower of W front but exact location and dimensions unknown.
1999: excavations just to the N of St James identified an unrelated buttress that may be a remnant of St Denis's church (see BSE 052).
