Full Description
A 19th century malting south of Northgate Station Bury St Edmunds. Visible on 1880's, 1900' and 1920's OS maps.
2005 Historic Building Recording: The site comprise 16 buildings, both freestanding and abutting/interlinked structures and additional lean-to or freestanding canopy structures. The only physical evidence of the former mid-19th century malthouse remaining was a brick wall and debris. From cartographic and other historic evidence the malthouse comprised an elongated rectangular building in plan form with a pitched roof, roughly orientated east-west. This was abutted by two similar kilns, featuring pyramidal roofs with central flues. The standing buildings on the site represent the gradual adaption of malting/brewing methods. The malting was built at the Station Hill site as a result of the railway link. Malthouse marked on 1886, 1904, 1926 OS maps, however by 1965 OS Map the area was market Depot and Warehouses. See also photo shwoing the area c. 1880 (S1).
