Full Description

Martlesham Heath airfield. Hexagonal airfield defence pillbox, facing SE. The entrance and embrasures have been blocked.

Type 22 or FW3/22 pillbox, constructed of reinforced concrete with an internal single brick face in stretcher bond. The entrance is located in the NW elveation and has been partially blocked with brickwork to a height of 1.34m. Just to the north of the doorway is a rifle embrasure measuring 0.23m and 0.32m high that has been subsequently blocked with brickwork. Each of the otherfive elevation contain an embrasure measuring 0.77m wide and 0.34m high that have been subsequently blocked with brickwork. Internally a Y shaped brck wall of English bond, designed to stop ricochetinfg bullets, was recorded at the centre of the pillbox. Original surviving features include nails fixed into the internal brick face below and either side of each embrasure, along with metal brackets fixed into the Y shaped brick wall (S2).
