Full Description
'Old Hall Park' shown and named on early OS maps as large area to SE of Old Hall (see EBG 023) with numerous trees. Not clear on Hodskinson's map (S2), other early maps not checked. History and details need researching.
John Kirby in the 1730s-1760s (John Kirby's Suffolk: his maps and roadbooks; Dymond D (ed), Suffolk Records Soc, Vol XLVII, 2004, 97-98) states 'A little south of the church is a neat mansion builyt not many years since by Chaplin Esq; from whom it descended to Sir Henry Hankey, Knt, one of the present Aldermen of London. It is now a country seat for that family'.
Largely extant on 1940s RAF Aps. Present condition: partly arable but still significant survival in places.
There is a thin scatter of Medieval and Early Post Medieval detected metalwork from the west side of the N-S stream.
There is a drawing by John Constable (who lived at East Bergholt) of 1816 of Elm Trees in Old Hall Park, East Bergholt in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
