Full Description

Site of Loudham Church (dedication unknown). Status: rectory. Domesday Book 1086: Lands of Gilbert, Bishop of Evreux: 'In Ludham ... a church with 60 acres.' (S1).
Listed in the Norwich Taxation of 1254 (S2).
Parsonage surrendered 1591 (S3).
Site known, destroyed 1591 (S4).
'Loudham ... whose well-endowed church long stood as a picturesque ruin in the park in front of the Hall'. (S5).
May 1988: Sited to area of TM 311 541 by owner, who has reputedly seen flint foundations there. Much human bone, including skulls, found during digging (?re-digging) ha-ha a few years ago, from TM 3095 5404 and TM 3105 5412, presumably church cemetery. Previous church location given as TM 308 541 approximately, examined and no evidence of any building found (S6). Church and `Chappel Yd' shown on an estate map of 1738 by John Kirby; church shown on an estate map of 1786 by Isaac Johnson (S7). 1555 `church not used'; 1609 `church a hayhouse, steeple a dovehouse used by owners of Hall' (S8).
