Full Description

2013: An archaeological community event excavating 29 test pits by local residents and other volunteers. The event was organised by the Hoxne Heritage Group, as part of their HLF funded project 'The Story of Hoxne'. The test pits frequently demonstrated that preserved archaeological layers are present - see HXN 062, 063-072 and DEN 012.

A former ditch line was seen in Test Pit 33, which may date to after the enclosure of Denham Green in the 18th/19th centuries, although it could possibly be an earlier drainage ditch across the green. Fifteen fragments of medieval pottery were found in addition to sherds of 15th-18th century pottery. The bowl of a clay tobacco pipe moulded into an acorn, with a stem with a stamp on it dates to the 19th century (S1). (Mapped approx. location)
