Full Description

2015: A small pit containing occasional fragments of worked flint, heat-altered flint and fired clay, exact dating was not possible but it is likely that thay pre-date the Middle Bronze Age. This may suggest that given its geographical location the site was a possible prehistoric occupation site. The date of five postholes is unclear althoug one cotained a fragment of early medieval pottery. It seems likely that the postholes were broadly contemporary but their function is unknown and they did not necessarily belong to the same building or structure. The probable medieval features were all sealed by subsoil layer which contained a small quantity of medieval pottery but also produced a few fragments of post-medieval roof tile. This deposit is assumed to have been a naturally formed subsoil, but the presence within it of cultural material shows that it had been modified, perhaps by farming or horticulture (S1).
