Monument record BEL 012 - A possible ring ditch, visible as a cropmark on the northern bank of the River Fynn.

A ring ditch or ditched enclosure can be seen as a cropmark on aerial photographs and identified on a geophysical survey (S4), on the northern bank of the River Fynn, centred on circa TM229477, Little Bealings parish. The enclosure is slightly irregular in shape, possibly slightly polygonal in form but this may be an effect of plough damage. It is circa 15 metres in diameter. This ring ditch, and two similar features nearby (BEL 013, BEL 014), are located in an area of well drained soils, possibly on a small island of gravel. Its location on the bank of the River Fynn below the 10 metre contour is not typical of round barrows of Bronze Age date, and potential interpretations as the remains of monuments or settlements of the Saxon period, or alternatively a settlement of the later prehistoric period, may be more likely; finds from both periods are known in this area (see BEL 014 and BEL 016).
