Full Description

April 2016. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme.
An undated circular mound, perhaps a Bronze Age round barrow, a medieval or post medieval post mill mound, or a feature relating to Second World War military activity, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs, most clearly on (S1). It is surrounded by a ditch and has a possible irregularly shaped pit at its centre. The latter is most reminiscent of a post mill pit, but could instead relate to a Second World War feature; extensive evidence of Second World War military activity can be seen on heathland to the immediate north of the site (HLY 133, for example). A white mark is visible at this location on aerial photographs taken in 1943 (S2), but the laser copies viewed are not clear enough to discern whether this is recent military activity, or the soilmark of an older feature.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 8th April 2016.
