Full Description
May 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty National Mapping Programme.
The site of a large dispersed Second World War and Cold War military camp associated with RAF Butley/Bentwaters Airfield (RLM 047) is visible on aerial photographs within the grounds of Rendlesham Park (RLM 022) (S1-S2). The site mainly consists of groups of accommodation buildings, huts and larger structures, and associated shelters and services. Some areas of military training (minor trenching and weapons pits) have also been included within the site. Some areas of the site were located within woodland belts and along the edges of plantations. It is possible that structural remains and footings/hard standing may remain in places. The military buildings have not been mapped individually; rather polygons defining the main extent of the visible components have been created – other than a possible structure at TM 3415 5369 of uncertain date and origin, but assumed Second World War. A number of the tracks and access roads have also been mapped. An area of earthwork at TM 3425 5370 may also relate to military activity, but have been recorded within RLM 076.
