Full Description
Site of Cross, earliest mention, Speed 1610.
A preaching cross was erected at Cornhill, Ipswich, in 1510 by Edmund Daundy on the site of the Market Cross which replaced it in 1628. For details of the twenty-eight foot diameter cross see illustration. In 1694 a statue of Justice was erected on the summit of the cross; presented to the town by Francis Nugent MP. This statue, the five wooden masks, and an inscribed shield are now in Ipswich Museum. The market cross was pulled down in 1812. (S2)
