Full Description
January 2020. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
An area of possible Second World War practice trenches are seen as earthworks (which have since been levelled) on aerial photographs(S1-S2). The features consist of a range of different types of trenches which vary in length, width and alignment. These trenches most likely relate to Second World War military training features. Some of the trenches have related banks which may have been defensive features of the trench or spoil from their construction. Within the extent of area polygon there are a number of small pits and possible vehicle tracks which also most likely relate to Second World War military training. The small pits have not been mapped in detail due to the small size of the pits and the scale of the aerial photograph making it difficult to map the pits accurately. The majority of the features can be seen as earthworks in the 1940s and are presumed to have been levelled by the 1950s (S3). The features are in close proximity to further possible Second World War Training features to the east (ELV 196) and further possible practice trenches to the south (BNH 128 and BNH 172).
