Full Description
Excavations conducted at Site 49 revealed evidence of Roman activity spanning the second to fourth centuries AD, with the majority of the phased features assigned to the latter end of that period. No contexts have been dated to prehistoric, earlier Roman, Anglo-Saxon, medieval or post-medieval times.
However, evidence for Early Roman activity is present in the form of residual pottery, and residual evidence for Mesolithic to Bronze Age flint working was also recovered. One sherd of intrusive medieval pottery was excavated from a Roman feature.
The phased archaeological remains on Site 49 consisted of pits, ditches, middens, and an oven. The earliest, Middle Roman, activity on the site likely relates to land clearance, followed by the establishment of a ditch, which appears to have divided the site into an area for waste disposal to the west and habitation to the east. This division continued into the Late Roman period, with the construction of a bread oven, fuelled by oak wood and containing grains of wheat, to the east of the ditch and an area of pitting and middening to the west. These remains likely represent part of the same settlement identified on Site 8 – albeit a slightly later phase – marking a transitionary area between the more domestic activity on Site 8 and the wider landscape and represented by linear features on Site 48 to the west.
