Monument record NBN 036 - Late Saxon to High Medieval field system at East Anglia One Area 35

2017: The excavation revealed evidence of activity dating from the Late Anglo-Saxon to the high medieval period. The remains comprised elements of an 11th–12th century field system, which was later altered/replaced by an enclosure during the high medieval period. A substantial assemblage of charred cereal remains recovered from a group of pits/possible structure and an animal bone deposit in one of the ditches provides information regarding the medieval economy of the site, which appears to have been located close to a contemporary settlement/farmstead. Residual fragments of Bronze-Iron Age pottery provide evidence of background prehistoric activity within the wider area. An undated pit produced several fragments of possible briquetage pedestal of uncertain date. (S1)
