Full Description

October 2017: The detailed fluxgate gradiomneter survey prospected a variety of geophysical anomalies inclusing a single potential former field boundary, five potential archaeological pits and a discretegeological anomaly. Modern ferrugenic and non-ferrous service pipe runs associated with the waset water plant were further recorded along with area of magnetic disturbance (S1).

2018: Full report to follow. Summary below.
A programme of archaeological trial trench evaluation revealed Late Iron Age/Romano British ditches along the N and W periphery of the site.
Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2018. (S2)

2021: In August to October 2021, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological excavation at the northern edge of the village of Rendlesham, Suffolk. An area of 0.29ha was excavated following a trial-trench evaluation of the larger development site in August 2018 by Suffolk Archaeology CIC (SACIC). The excavation revealed two ditches and further gullies on two main alignments running broadly north/south or north-east/south-west. These possibly marked droveways. Dispersed between these linear archaeological features were 30 small pits or postholes, some clustered, but with no clear structures evident. Pottery from the features combined indicates that use of the site was focused on the Late Iron Age to Early Roman periods (Phase 1: c. 100 BC–c. 150 AD). Two pits are notable, one with a dump of later Iron Age pottery and three hammerstones, possibly indicating a ‘special deposit’, whilst the other had been clay lined to receive an Early Roman storage jar, which perhaps had served as a water source. The find of a rare Roman bow brooch (an atypical Colchester Derivative Rearhook variant) is of further note. (S3)
