Monument record STN 164 - Possible rectilinear enclosure of unknown but perhaps post medieval date

Please read our .

Summary

A possible rectilinear enclosure, perhaps of post medieval date, is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs. The archaeological origin of what is visible on the photos is not certain, and the enclosure is not visible on imagery from a 2015 lidar survey. However, it is similar in size and shape to other, probably post medieval enclosures mapped in the surrounding area; these are thought to be associated with warrening.

Full Description

December 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
A possible rectilinear enclosure, perhaps of post medieval date, is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs (S1). The archaeological origin of what is visible on the photos is not certain, and the enclosure is not visible on imagery from a 2015 lidar survey (S2). However, it is similar in size and shape to other, probably post medieval enclosures mapped in the surrounding area (such as SHER STN 119 and 120 900m to the southwest); these are thought to be associated with warrening. The enclosure is presumed to have been levelled.
