Full Description
2019: An archaeological evaluation revealed a medieval pit dated 11th-13th century, two post-medieval ditches/pits and a modern path. It is possible that the path and post-medieval features relate to activity at the blacksmith’s forge shown on early 20th century OS mapping of the area, while the medieval pit is representative of an earlier phase of activity at the site which was possibly associated with activity on the historic Newton Green. Several undated features – four ditches, ten pits and a pit/posthole – were also revealed during the excavations. (S1)
The site is east of a Roman road and north west of a medieval ditch. There are also local scatters of medieval and post-medieval pottery and ceramic building material. Evaluation (eight trenches) prior to the construction of six new dwellings uncovered an 11th–13th century pit, two post-medieval ditches or pits, and a modern path. It is possible that the path and post-medieval features belong to the blacksmith’s forge shown on early 20th century OS maps, while the medieval pit may be connected with activity on the historic Newton Green.
Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2019 (S2).
