Monument record ELV 179 - Possible post medieval rectangular enclosure.

Please read our .

Summary

A possible post medieval enclosure is seen as an earthwork (which has since been levelled) on aerial photographs. The rectangular enclosure is most likely post medieval in date and may have related to a stock enclosure or for post medieval agriculture. The enclosure is in very close relation to a further possible post medieval enclosure to the west (ELV 178). The enclosure is also seen on the Frist Edition Ordnance Survey map. The enclosure can be seen as an earthwork on the 1940s aerial photographs and is presumed to be levelled as the feature is not visible on recent (2016) aerial photographs.

Full Description

December 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
A possible post medieval enclosure is seen as an earthwork (which has since been levelled) on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The rectangular enclosure is most likely post medieval in date and may have related to a stock enclosure or for post medieval agriculture. The enclosure is in very close relation to a further possible post medieval enclosure to the east (ELV 178) and to multiple probable post medieval banks to the south (ELV 180). The enclosure has been mapped on the Frist Edition Ordnance Survey map (S4). The enclosure has also been mapped by this survey as the function of the enclosure is unknown. The enclosure can be seen as an earthwork on the 1940s aerial photographs and is presumed to be levelled as the feature is not visible on recent (2016) aerial photographs (S3). Due to a lack of adequate control points when rectifying the photos, the locational accuracy of the mapping may have been slightly reduced.
