Full Description

Brickworks, marked as 'Works' on 1:10560 map. Ovens still survive overgrown. In operation at the time of the 1840 Tithe Map - R. Chaston owner, George Godbold occupier (latter listed in 1844 White's Directory under Metfield as 'Geo Godbold, farmer and brick and tile maker' (see MTF 048) ; White's Directory 1891-1892 under Mendham lists 'C W Chaston, brick and tile maker') (S1).
Kilns survive as a built structure and grassed mounds in the grounds of Kiln House (formerly The Firs). To the S is rough ground, formerly the yard & pit of the works; a cliff demarcates the S boundary.
